Eating Problems

Cats can be picky about what they choose to eat and what they choose to ignore. While this may just be their way of letting you know what they like and dislike, sometimes the reason may be a medical condition. There are several reasons your cat may not be eating as they should, such as:

  • Illness
  • Recent Vaccination
  • Unfamiliar Surroundings
  • Travel
  • Psychological Issues
  • Excessive Noise
  • Dirty Food Bowls
  • Other Felines

Treating Eating Problems

When you bring your furry friend to our pet hospital, our veterinarian near you will ask you about what you have observed regarding your pet's eating habits and any changes in behavior. Our vet will also want to know about any health issues your pet may have experienced. The vet will then perform a thorough examination of your pet. If needed, tests may be required, which may include blood work, X-rays, or an ultrasound using our in-house diagnostic equipment.

How your feline’s eating problems are resolved depends on the cause. If our veterinarian determines there is an illness, a plan of action for treatment will be created. This may include medication or a change in the type of food (wet or dry) to encourage eating. Since not eating can be life-threatening, feeding your pet a liquid diet via a syringe may be recommended. A feeding tube may also be suggested.
